Most models find place in C- grade films
Amanpreet Wahi

Drop-dead gorgeous model Amanpreet Wahi is back on television. The Delhi girl has been picked to host UTV World Movies show ‘World Movies This Week’ – a lowdown on films across the globe. This show goes on air from 17 October.

Amanpreet began her career as an anchor before taking to modelling. She was the Gladrags’ model of the year in 2004. For a brief period she anchored Max Style on Zoom.

In an exclusive chat with Tellychakkar, Amanpreet talks about her new show, her love for films but not for acting. Read on.

What is it about models that bring them to hosting movie shows?

Firstly, we are very intelligent. Models aren’t bimbos but we are beauty with brains. Besides, I’m not new to anchoring. I started my career as an anchor for a Doordarshan show. Thereafter, I switched to modelling. In between, I anchored another show on Zoom but modelling consumed most of my time and thus I couldn’t take up other offers.

Fortunately, this show is being shot in my hometown (Delhi) and plus UTV are excellent paymasters. There was no way that I could turn down this offer.

Do you usually keep a tab on international movies?

I’m a complete movie buff. I do catch on to the all the latest films from Hollywood and Bollywood. Though I must confess that after coming on to this show, I’ve watched more films from other languages. Thus it’s been an enriching experience for me as well.

Who are your favourite Hollywood stars?

I like Pierce Brosnan. The others that I admire are Al Pacino and John Travolta.

And what about Bollywood?

I simply love Salman Khan. Amitabh, Shah Rukh are good but no one can beat Salman,. Among the new actors I really like Ranbir Kapoor. He’s a talented actor.

Is Bollywood now on par with the rest of the world?

We’re matching shoulders with the rest only in terms of marketing and money. However, if you talk of quality then we’re still far behind. We do make good films but only a few of them. Subjects such as homosexuality are still considered a taboo in this country. We’re reluctant to show reality.

Won’t your show have anything on Indian cinema?

No, we will have a section called Taste of India, where we will talk about films such The Namesake, Water, etc.

Will you be interviewing top celebs from Hollywood?

I wouldn’t be conducting the interviews but we will have the A-list actors, directors talking on our show. As an anchor, I’ll be bringing you all the news and gossip from the international film circuit.

Don’t such shows only cater to a niche audience?

That’s a fair comment but I think our viewers are bored of the realty shows and the saas-bahu dramas. This show will come as a welcome change for everyone. While there’s no denying that such shows will not appeal much to the masses but our endeavor is to generate interest. Besides, if not for the content, people will like watching a beautiful anchor. Looking good is half the job done.

Are you going to restrict your television appearance to anchoring?

I simply can’t see myself doing regressive saas bahu dramas nor these done to death reality shows. I’m happy to remain an anchor.

A lot of models have taken to Bollywood. When will we get to see Amanpreet?

I did do one film Let’s enjoy. Thereafter, Sajid Khan offered me a small role in Heyy Babyy. I was the first choice for the role of Preeti Sabharwal. In fact they even called me for hockey practice but I turned down the offer (mind you, I was a champion hockey player in school).

As for models making it big in Bollywood well, there are just a few of them. Majority of them find place in C- grade films.

Honestly, I’m not at all interested in doing films. In fact, I’m not keen on moving to Mumbai at all. My boyfriend too isn’t keen on me doing films. I don’t want to leave my family.

Finally, who’s the man in your life?

Well, I’m not revealing his name. He’s an industrialist from Delhi. I couldn’t have asked for a better partner than him.
